ALlentown Pain Center Seminars

2 day advanced dental sleep medicine

This course is the PERFECT follow up to the introduction course, but can stand on its own!

In the introduction course we review dental sleep medicine principles and the role of the dentist in treating obstructive disorders.

LectureIn this two day course the dental sleep medicine principles taught in the introduction course are reviewed in greater depth.  The intricacies or oral appliance therapy that often spell the difference between success and failure are explored.  Understanding the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of muscle and joint complications is critical in patient care, and not only will these be reviewed in detail, but case presentations demonstrating these complications will be reviewed.

Keep in mind; this is not the HANDS-ON course.  The appliance therapy in terms of actually inserting it will take place during the INTRODUCTORY course.  In this course we will review that process in detail and go into much greater depth as to the methods that oral appliance therapy work, and the various appliances that are available.

LectureThe use of ambulatory studies will be taught.  Why we use them, when to use them, when not to use them, how to distribute them, and how to read them – all key factors in this critical tool’s use --  will be examined in depth.

Appliance selection and adjustment of those various appliances will be examined as well.

There will be several attendees who attended the introduction course and have started treating patients.  There will be ample time for questions that have arisen between the courses to be answered for everyone’s benefit.

Special emphasis will be made in the following areas:

  • The New Patient History and Examination
  • How to Evaluate the Joints and Muscles of th  Potential Patient for Oral Appliance Therapy
  • Insertion Details and Instructions for the Patient including Titration Instructions
  • Initial and Final Goals of Therapy (AND THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!)
  • Treatment of Joint and Muscle Complications
  • Post Insertion Testing
  • Communication with Sleep Physicians and Sleep Labs
